A Baptism Cake Topper for Damiano & His Two Dogs

I was so excited to work with Maila once again. I had created her wedding cake topper a few years before, but this time she asked me to make a cake topper for the Baptism of her sweet little boy, Damiano.

The Story Behind Damiano’s Baptism Cake Topper

In her request, Maila listed all the elements that needed to be present in her child’s cake topper. She wanted to represent Damiano’s happy little, loving and joyful world. At the centre of his world were his inseparable furry friends, the majestic Boxer and the lively Jack Russell, that cheerfully filled his days.

I couldn’t imagine a better place for little Damiano than sitting, smiling and feeling protected between his faithful four-legged friends. I carefully created every detail of the child: his delicately modelled blonde hair, the cute blue outfit his parents had chosen for the special occasion, and his sweet and innocent smile. There were two other meaningful and symbolic details that Maila had requested: the number ‘one’, as on his baptism day, Damiano would also celebrate his first birthday. The other important feature Maila had requested was a little bee, inspired by the theme of the party decorations. So I created a little white polka-dotted “1” out of Fimo clay which I positioned on the blue base of the topper and on top of the number ‘one’ I sat the cutest and most adorable little black and yellow bee with transparent wings that I had also modelled using Fimo clay. It seemed to observe the scene curiously from there. This detail perfectly tied in with the party favours—small jars of honey—and the balloon bee decorations that Maila had chosen for the celebratory lunch.

I paid particular attention to the way I modelled the dogs. The Boxer Dog was created with its characteristic powerful build, distinctive muzzle, and typical folds. The brown and white colouring was accurately reproduced using different shades of Fimo clay. The smaller but no less expressive Jack Russell had light beige fur and alert little ears. I decorated the oval-shaped cobalt blue base with delicate white flowers with orange and yellow centres scattered strategically to create visual balance. I completed the scene with a tiny red ladybird nestled in a patch of grass for good luck.

I hand-wrote “Il mio Battesimo” (My Baptism) in elegant white calligraphy at the centre of the base, creating a stunning contrast with the striking cobalt blue background.

A precious memory

When I browse through the archive of cake toppers I’ve made over many years, I like to pause and look at this one in particular. I’m always struck by the Boxer’s majesty, the Jack Russell’s patience, the child’s innocence, and the bee enjoying the scene. Each element tells a part of Damiano’s story and his baptism, transforming a simple cake topper into a precious family memory. Personalised cake toppers like this aren’t just decorations but true works of art that capture special moments in people’s lives.
