After the last order she had placed a few years earlier, Elena returned to me to commission a bespoke cake topper for second nuptials. This time, she wanted a unique topper for her best friend, who was about to celebrate her second marriage with a wonderful man. When Elena contacted me for this project, I knew I had to create something unique for a special couple.
The Magic of the Inherited Wedding Dress
For this meaningful ceremony, the bride had chosen to wear her mother-in-law’s wedding gown, which added deep sentimental value to the occasion. Elena sent me several photographs taken on the day of the dress-fitting of the wedding dress that had been masterfully modified by the skilful hands of her able seamstress. It was a masterpiece: the front with a tank-top effect adorned with delicate lace, a pleated silk waistband, dainty cap sleeves, a sensual V-back, and a lace skirt that completed the ensemble. Simply magical! I could envision how to recreate every detail in Fimo Clay for Elena’s bespoke cake topper.
The Groom’s “Casual-Chic” Style
The groom opted for a “casual-chic” look with a mix-and-match outfit: dark grey trousers, shoes and braces, a light blue shirt, a black bow tie with white polka dots, and—as a distinctive touch—a fabulous yellow jacket.
I modelled both outfits with extreme attention, ensuring that every detail was perfectly reproduced in the wedding cake topper. This combination of colours and styles perfectly reflected the couple’s vibrant personality.
Capturing the Essence of the Couple in this Cake Topper
As always, the selection of photographs I was sent to work from, showing the faces of the bride and groom, played a fundamental role in the success of my artistic interpretation of the bridal couple. Elena provided a lovely selection of close-up images of the smiling couple, allowing me to capture their relaxed and happy gaze. In the personalised cake topper, I positioned the groom’s hand on the bride’s shoulder to highlight their harmony as a couple. This detail was essential to communicate through this polymer clay sculpture.
The Details That Make a Bespoke Topper Unique
I used full-body photos to faithfully reproduce their physical characteristics in the topper. For the bride, I modelled a bouquet of white peonies with olive twigs and a wavy hairstyle that perfectly complemented her look. For the groom, I added his characteristic salt-and-pepper beard and rounded dark-framed glasses—details that made him immediately recognisable in the cake topper.
The Floral Base: The Final Touch
To complete the cake topper, I created a base painted in pistachio green, enriched with tufts of grass, small white flowers, and, as in all my custom-made toppers, a little ladybug for good luck.
I was overjoyed when Elena and the newlyweds reacted with a big “WOW!” upon seeing their finished cake topper!
